Patsaka Trust
WHAT WE DO
Patsaka Trust’s current programming is focused on addressing priority community needs through home grown or local solutions. Youth have been placed at the forefront of the development process. Thus they will be empowered to be active decision makers and advocate as well as agents for development. The organization mainly make use of two platforms of service delivery namely; the existing community structures, and the youth. These have to be empowered to provide quality and comprehensive services to the community. In short Patsaka Trust harnesses and directs all resources in one chosen direction of promoting community development through youth led interventions.
Main Activities
• Awareness & Advocacy campaigns targeting both men & women in the community of Kariba
• Information Dissemination (creating access to information within the community of Kariba)
• Provision of basic education to the community of Kariba
• Capacitating the youth in Kariba through income generating projects
Programmes
Patsaka Trust implements its programs through four thematic areas
1. Women Development and Emancipation, Household Economic strengthening
Patsaka recognizes a loophole in poverty and household economic vulnerability of the majority of the marginalized community households in Kariba. Therefore, it embarks on improving the livelihoods of these poor and /or marginalized households through income generating projects aimed at promoting incomes growths, savings promotion, asset building and consolidation. Women are empowered to effectively participate in social, economic and political spheres and to utilize gender-based violence services. The focus is on increasing the qualitative and quantitative participation of women and girls in decision making positions through various programs and advocacy initiatives. This enhances opportunities for increasing women’s participation in profitable components of the key sectors value chains driving the Zimbabwean economy.
2. Youth Development & Empowerment
Youth unemployment, lack of soft and hard skills, life skills, lack of career guidance opportunities, lack of access to information, isolation in decision making and high HIV/AIDs prevalence rate among local youth are a plethora of problems which bedevil young people and require urgent attention and action. To close this gap, Patsaka focuses on developing the untapped and great leadership potential in young people so that they can be decision makers and advocates as well as leaders who are assertive and empowered to make informed decisions and choices about their lives. This area seeks to address high unemployment levels among youth through the creation and identification of entrepreneurship opportunities, facilitation to access to finance, training and skills in business development services and linkages to local, regional and international markets.
3. Educational and Constitutionalism;
Several strides were made in the previous strategic period in the provision of basic education to children and also in improving literacy levels of the adults (men and women). However, the existing wide base of illiterate community people is a cause for concern. Patsaka scaled up the provision of both formal and non formal education to children, youth and women in the community by running an independent college; Goodhope at the Heights. Education remains the key strategy for empowerment and gender equity.
There is also a deliberate lobbying by Patsaka of increasing citizen participation in democratic processes in line with the provisions of the Constitution and relevant international norms and standards.
4. Community level advocacy through Media and Media Diversity
In terms of addressing community needs and focus on community development for transparency, accountability and good governance. Patsaka Trust has deliberately initiated a community radio for provision of information, education and entertainment. Reality being that community broadcasting is the cornerstone of community development. A resource centre which has a production studio, library, internet café and information kiosk for the community has already been set at the Patsaka Trust offices.
